Basking in The Afterglow – Ylva Bengtsson & Hannah Giles

Basking In The Afterglow är ett fotografiskt verk som består av analoga negativ som har placerats i fjällandskap i norra Sverige och exponerats för konstant solljus och aftonrodnad i juni månad, perioden när timmarna mellan solnedgång och soluppgång är korta. 

Med inspiration från de karaktäristiska elementen i landskapet har färger från miljöerna överförts till 35 mm film, exponerats och framkallats. Efter framkallning har filmerna placerats i landskapet och exponerats en andra gång under en tidsperiod 7 till 28 dagar. 

Tiden i landskapet får negativets emulsion att reagera och fångar upp spår av jord, vatten eller väderfenomen och tillåter naturen skapa sin egen gestaltning. En abstrakt landskapsbild sker i samarbetet mellan platsen och oss själva. Varje serie är knuten till väderförhållanden, flora och fauna som kan påverka materialet på olika sätt och kan därför inte återfå samma resultat igen. Verket är en reflektion av flera lager förknippat med landskap såsom historia och natur. Vi är fascinerade av hur materialen reagerar i de olika miljöerna och de olika sätt landskap kan upplevas och uppfattas på. 

Ylva Bengtsson och Hannah Giles började samarbeta under studier – konstnärligt mastersprogram i fotografi vid Akademin Valand. Sedan dess har de tillsammans genomfört residens både i Sverige och England och ställt ut med ett flertal projekt, med stöd från bland annat Konstnärsnämnden. Deras pågående samarbete undersöker abstraktion av landskap och experimenterar med kameralöst fotografi. De använder fotografisk film likt en canvas i direktkontakt med landskapet/miljön.

Basking in the afterglow is a body of work containing 35 mm photographic film negatives which have been placed in natural light within the landscape of northern Sweden. The negatives were exposed by sunlight during the month of June where the hours between dusk and dawn are short, leaving an afterglow, a delicate light without complete darkness. 

Inspired by the characteristic elements in the landscape, the colours in each location were selected then transferred to 35mm film and exposed. After they had been developed, they were placed in the landscape to be exposed a second time, for the duration of 7 to 28 days. 

The time each negative spends exposed in the landscape causes the emulsion to react and capture traces of soil, lake water and weather phenomena allowing the elements of nature to shape the work itself. An abstracted landscape image appears during the collaboration between the place and ourselves. Each series is tied to weather conditions, flora, and fauna that effect the materials in different ways; the same results cannot be recreated. The work is a reflection of several layers that are embedded within landscape, such as the history and nature it holds. We are fascinated with how the materials react in these environments, as well as the different ways of experiencing and perceiving landscape. 

Hannah Giles and Ylva Bengtsson began collaborating whilst studying their Master of Fine Arts Programme in Photography at Academy Valand in 2014. Since then, they have exhibited with several projects and been invited to a number of residencies in both the UK and Sweden, with support by The Swedish Arts Grants Committee. Their current collaborative project addresses themes involving abstraction of landscapes, and are working with experimental cameraless photography – using photographic material as a canvas that comes into direct contact with the environment itself.
